PLT - is it a problem?
Hi all,
About 20 years ago there was a load of talk about Power Line Transmission (PLT), sending high-frequency data over national grit power lines. I hear a lot of talk about the lower bands, such as 160m, 80m and 40m bands would be affected, and a few radio societies and clubs were somewhat upset by the idea. Also, the introduction of RF generators in ordinary consumer economy electric lamps.
Now, 25 years later, I never hear a peep. Has there been any interference? Has any of you on this forum ever witnessed (first hand) any disturbances?
I live in Southern Spain, in a valley, beside a national grid switch station. All that I have witnessed was a 30dB increase in the noise floor, which was reduced dramatically by
: using a real, pole-in-the-dirt ground for my power (after an isolation transformer - no Earth)
: physically positioning the antennas to cancel out any rubbish from the direction of the power plant

If you zoom out you can see the distance between them. Also power wires pass up the river, 200m to the SW of the house. The problem I had appeared to be an increased general noise floor. I have never heard any RF carriers that could be attributed to RF radiation from a power plant using data.
I wonder if PLT was one of those "fad's" that came and died a death by the advent of optical-fibre communications? and 3G/4G data traffic?
Any views or opinions?
