I think that RS232 is a bit too slow for many applications. USB2 has a data rate of something like 480Mb/s.
Can the handshaking pins work that fast? It would be interesting to see how fast they will work.

But I think that Densils original problem was to convert USB data and keep the data rate, at least that is how I interpreted the original post.
Perhaps Densil coiuld clarify a bit more?

I believe you can use the RTS/DSR signals for switching if you don't need them for flow control. I have used the cheap FTDI modules with PIC micro controllers and find them easy to use. I like the versions with a mini USB socket on board as they are self powered. I use TeraTerm as a terminal program since hyper terminal disappeared after win XP.

Hi Densil, Ivan and Paul,
Strange, I didn't get any email notification about this thread!! Hafta check my config. Sorry for the delay Densil.

It was interesting about the Onion Omega 2, and USB to TTL 3.3V 5.5V Serial Adapter Module. The latter only costs just US$1.5 from Aliexpress. Looks like these will do what you are asking.

You may want to take a look at the  FT232R chip. Here is the datasheet:
http://www.ftdichip.com/Support/Documents/DataSheets/ICs/DS_FT232R.pdf
Pages 23 and 24 will be of interest.

One of the above modules are based on this chip (FT232RL), but it depends on how deep you want to go. The modules are the quickest and easiest way to go.

I had a Swedish Christmas party yesterday and a course the day before so I have been offline for a bit. Have another company Christmas party tomorrow night. It's "all go!!" :-)

@Densil, please let us know how you get on with this project as I would be interested to know how succesful you are. I would also be interested in knowing if the modules can switch DC to the end equipment - i.e. can you unplug one end and the 5V out at the other end stops? I ask because I can also see another use. At work we have a USB DC switch to power-down 32 LTE broadband dongles, and the switch just cuts the +5V on the USB cables to disable the LTE modem.

usb 2 serial data Empty usb 2 serial data

Post by Densil Fri Dec 01, 2017 6:45 pm

hi Harry
I have 2 wideband oscillator / transmitter modules which can be modulated up to 600mhz and a matching rx modules. the rf frequency is about 10ghz.
I want to put a usb signal through the 2 module pairs. I thought the 2 usb data pins was tx/rx but it is not. bothe usb data pins are bidirectional and change to hiZ on rx and loZ on tx.
Is there any way i can convert the usb data to separate tx and rx ?

I have got two pairs of modules so i can have 2 way data links but i need to get txdata and rxdata separated. The modules works to sent tv and even the tx from my 2m and 70cm radios.

Got any ideas ? or is this off topic on this forum. Not in a hurry cos this is a winter project.

Have u got back from spain yet ? i tried listening 4u on 14mhz but did not hear you. just so as you know i tried.

Thanks in advance
/D
