Philips EE memories Empty Philips Electronic Engineer kit manuals

Post by Miriam English Sat Feb 10, 2024 5:24 am

Some of the old links have gone, but try to always remember to check the Internet Archive for those addresses. They keep copies of a lot of old pages. I managed to download the Philips EE20 kit manual through the Internet Archive's WaybackMachine.

The Internet Archive also has a lot of old books directly searchable. They've also organised their collection a bit more nowadays. They have a section devoted to manuals

Also some of the very old electronics books are on Project Gutenberg. For example "The Boy Electrician" by Alfred Powell Morgan

Hello Glenn,
Thank you very much for the additional links. It is strange that one can search and search, and everything one finds can only be found once.
I have many times thought "That's interesting, I will come back later", but later on, the same search does not reveal the item.

Now I have a lot of items to go through and I am grateful for them. I wonder if it would be a good idea to put a "memory lane links" page on HHH?. You have found a load, I have a load and I have 100s of documents, or links to them.
Anyway, I have to go back to bed now. Didn't get a wink of sleep last night.

Very best regards from Harry - SM0VPO

Many thanks for all the links. I really do appreciate you posting all these links. I shall follow every one of them then tomorrow. At the moment I am off sick and cannot really do much. I have this winter cold that everyone else at work has got. About 15 people at work are all off (out of 80 pers) so it is getting a bit serious.

But I wonder how long it took you to get all those links. I have not yet followed them but I have recently been searching for vintage / nostalgia, so those two sites somehow got missed. But thank you very much for sharing them with us.

Very best regards from Harry Lythall - SM0VPO

Hello Harry,

I hope you will get well soon.

Many of the links was "unfortunately" just found by serendipity (Google error?). The EE sites was "deliberately" Google searched.

Just found another very interesting site a few days ago - literally loads of scanned nostalgic magazines:

Click on the front pages to select a given magazine:
http://www.americanradiohistory.com/
Hereafter you see a yearly overview of the selected magazine:
E.g.: Click in the small "correct signs" to download the selected scanned magazine:
http://www.americanradiohistory.com/Elementary_Electronics_Master_Page.htm
E.g.:
http://www.americanradiohistory.com/Archive-Elementary-Electronics/1970/Elementary-Electronics-1974-01-02.pdf

Another british example "Radio Constructor":

Hi Ruud,
Many thanks for this. I have also done a LOT of searching, but all I managed to find was the C3 receiver template WITH all the components fitted.

I have also downloaded several EE files and i will make them available to you on my server, if you want them.

Most of the links I have seen seem to come back to the same pages all the time, so it is difficult to get any new information.

Very best regards from Harry

After a lot of searching, I finally found at least four EE-20 templates.
Real size is 24 x 17 cm.
They can be downloaded HERE

Hi Glenn,
Thank you VERY MUCH for the links. They are a real goldmine of information. I also found
http ee.old.no/library/ (:// removed)
On that page you can find just about all the manuals for the whole Philips series. There is a heavy tendency towards german, butall the information I was seeking is there.
Thank you very much.

Very best regards from Harry

Hi Ruud,
I also had a problem with the AF116, but it was my own fault: I burned it. But I managed to get a cheap OC171, which worked exactly the same. I later tried an AF114 that came with a bag of mixed transistors from Bardwells, in Sheffield. Also good results.

Hello Glenn,

Thank you very much for these links. I will follow these today. I really do appreciate you taking the time and trouble to share this information.

The old Trionic and the Philips EE kits bring back a lot of old memories, and with the memories come little snippets of data I had forgotten, for example, modulating the 6v 50mA lamp in the kit with audio, and using a photo-resistor and HiZ headphones (no amplifier) to recover the audio.

Very best regards and once more many thanks for sharing your information.

Hi Ruud,
It is interesting that the Dutch manual is different to the English manual - one page per circuit.
I presume that the two circuits you attached were the TRF reflex receiver and the second - a sound activated alarm?

I have had the EE20 as well, I think I was around 10 years by then.
I think I still have some templates.
I will have a look.
In the beginning I had a lot of trouble, because all designs that contained the AF116 didn't work.
The reason was a faulty AF116 that was delivered with the EE20 kit.
At the time, an AF116 costed a small fortune, 4,50 Dutch Guilders!!
I remember that after having built all designs from the templates, I started experimenting using the matrix board. I certainly learned a lot during that time!
Philips later introduced the ME series, a combination of mechanical designs and electronics.
Unfortunately the acrylic glass plates broke when one of my designs fell from the table, and that was the end of the ME kit...

Philips EE memories Empty Philips EE memories

Post by admin Sun Dec 25, 2016 4:10 pm

In my early years, around 1960, I had a Tri-ang"Trionic" radio kit. All the components were encapsulated in plastic, including the two LW and MW tuning coils. Everything plugged into a PCB. There were six PCBs; A1 to A6. I remember A3 was a regenerative receiver and I could receive hams on top-band.

After this I had a Philips EE (Electronic Engineering) kit, which had about 20 experiments. That a kit had loose components, which were fitted to a matrix board with clips at every node on a circuit template overlay.

Does anyone have any of these kits and could share a few photo's or scans of the boards and overlays?

I remember the Philips EE receiver was a "reflex" type receiver with a TRF receiver, and the detected RF was fed back into the same device (AF116) for re-amplification at audio. I took it up to 7MHz by using another coil, and I even added RF feedback to make a "regenerative reflex receiver".

I put my fathers transistor radio at the foot of the garden (250m long) and listened to Radio Luxemburg on both his radio and my Philips EE radio. When the station faded out, it only faded on one radio, not the other; very rarely both at the same time.

If anyone has any data. photos, scans of these kits I would be very grateful. I think I have the circuits for the Philips EE projects, but it is the template overlays I really want to find for the Philips EE.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
